Sunday Stash

I am slowly adding to my ruler stash. For the longest time I just had one ruler (to rule them all!). My mum bought me quilting supplies as a surprise gift when I first mentioned wanting to quilt. She asked some random lady in the quilting section what size cutting mat and ruler she should get me. Bless that lady. She said “biggest you can afford.”

So Mum got me a big 6.5” x 24” ruler and a big mat to match. I love my mum. So I used my big ruler for everything, even squaring up HSTs. Overkill much?!

Then I discovered rulers came in other sizes and shapes. Didn’t quite understand why til I went to a quilting class and discovered how much easier it was to trim small things with small rulers.
Now I am slowly adding to my ruler stash. A 4.5” square, an 8” square (which disappeared during the move, sad), and my new toy that is as yet still unopened!

A triangle ruler!

The nearest craft shop is about 50min drive away so when Mum mentioned she was heading that way I asked her to pop in and grab me a triangle ruler. I wanted one that did at least 7” (planning to join in Bloom Bloom Pow!). Well Mum must have remembered Random Quilting Lady’s advice, so she got the biggest one she could find. It goes up to 12”. Awesome. One triangle ruler to rule them all and one giant ruler to rule them all, and a couple of smaller  ones to do the menial tasks.

Rulers in my quilt world

My quilt world is happy.

  2. I'm a bit of a ruler fanatic so I can justify just about any size or shape! It definitely makes life easier having the right size ruler. Happy sewing to you!

  3. Tee-hee, LOTR reference :) This gave me something to think about - I only have a very long ruler for cutting, and a dresden ruler. Thanks!

  4. I'm really happy for you! I know how handy it is to have the right size ruler for the job! Do you use the add-a-quarter ruler for your paper piecing? I can see I found another Lord of The Rings fan! :D

  6. That made me laugh - I tend to use whopping over sized rulers for everything and it is still quite a revelation that a smaller ruler can actually make things easier! I probably shouldn't tell my big ruler it is no longer the one ruler that rules them all...

  10. I tell my students the same, but add "and that you can store flat, although under the mattress is fine" as I've seen them stored on one end :-( I don't thinkive seen (noticed) a triangle one like that though, I think I'm in love!

  11. I got my ruler and mat in a beginner's set. 12" x 18" mat and 15cm x 30cm ruler. Still working it. So far I've always put fabric over rulers, though I have been seen flirting with triangle and Dresden rulers... :)

  12. Such great additions to the stash! Our tools make the fabric we have that much more fun (and easier) to utilize! And did I see you are doing Bloom Bloom Pow?! Me too! I'm finally making something for myself, and so excited about it!

  13. Now that sounds like a useful ruler! To be fair though I can convince myself pretty much any ruler is useful :)

  16. Tools can certainly make the job easier!! I have a triangle ruler I haven't opened yet but one day I will start a triangle quilt. Have you picked fabric for Bloom Bloom Pow?

  17. I'm like you, I just had one ruler a 24" long clear one which I used for everything. I couldn't see the need for other rulers. Then I shut it in the car boot and broke off 6" of it, and saw how useful the short bit was! I haven't branched in to triangles yet, but I did buy a 6" square recently. Perhaps I need to do a class or two to realise the benefits?
