I made a dress!

Okay perhaps that isn’t such a startling announcement to most people who sew… but for me, I don’t do dresses. I did try once upon a time – some simple sleeveless dresses. And Miss not yet 2 at the time promptly refused to wear them. Let’s just say that soured me on dressmaking. I mean all that fabric that I could use in a quilt, wasted on a dress that diva-child refuses to wear!

But Little Miss is now 3 and loves new clothes. So I thought I’d try my hand at it again. I even tried sleeves this go around! Okay so it’s still a very basic dress but I’m happy!

And we have success! Little-Miss-Lulu-who-picks-her-own-clothes put the dress on and refuses to take it off. Victory!

Look at those pigtails. They usually curl up into the cutest little ringlets. I’m going to be sad when that stops happening. She’s getting too big too fast.

The pattern is a freebie with a step-by-step photo tutorial from Pretty Prudent. I did come a little unstuck with the ruffles but I managed to make them work.

Ruffles

Even better? The fabric was in the clearance section of Spotlight. $4.99 for 1 metre and that was plenty to make this little dress. I couldn’t resist that sweet cherry blossom print. Miss 3 couldn’t resist the fact that it’s pink.

Cherry blossoms

Also I must admit I rather enjoyed a fairly quick project – with this taking than less than two hours. We’re currently on house arrest with my son being rather contagious with a bout of rubella (German measles). Hoping that as he is fully immunised it’ll be a mild dose, but in the meantime we’re stuck at home for the next week to prevent spreading it. More sewing time for me?! I wish!

  7. Gorgeous dress - sometimes simple is best. I've given up on dresses for my girls as they won't wear them (homemade or shop bought!) enjoy it while you can. Hope your boy makes a speedy recovery

  9. Too cute. I have Princess asking me to sew for her, but I suspect she'll decide she won't wear anything I make, so I'm resisting! Good luck with the sickliness

  12. Congrats on the dressmaking, small girls are such a great incentive to have a go, especially when they refuse to take the resulting dress off :)

House arrest doesn't sound too good, hope it goes by quickly.
