Quilt maths is not my friend.

I don’t like maths. Never have. Never will. Even when it’s quilty maths. I still don’t like it. Maybe that’s why I like paper piecing so much – there’s a lot less maths involved!

See it all started way back when I ordered some cute fabric to make a baby quilt for my friend’s new little bundle of joy. I decided on some fussy cut Little Red by Tasha Noel, with two different red based prints as the background.

All fine til I started cutting and realised I had ordered half as much background fabric as needed. Oops. And with shipping time being minimum 2 weeks, I didn’t want to order more and wait. The baby will be turning 5 soon at this rate.

So I changed my plans. And used some fabric I had in my stash instead. So instead of a red and white quilt, now I’ll have a red, white and aqua quilt. Even better!

Vintage Modern background

Plus, Vintage Modern Swirl looks so so pretty with this line of fabric!

Little Red square

This red background is one of the prints from the Little Red line – yep can’t remember the name but it’s super cute!

And originally I planned to also use a red and white stripe print from the same line too.

Little Red stripes

Til I made a block and it started making my eyes go weird. Like if I look at it too long, the lines start to move. I’m not going to be responsible for this new baby requiring glasses at an early age due to a traumatic quilt incident. So I decided against using this print after all.

So now instead of having a 12 block quilt – revised to a 9 block quilt – I’m now having a 6 block quilt. I’ll add a bunch of white around the squares. Then maybe if I can figure a way to turn back time and uncut all that red stripe fabric, use that as a binding.

And we are going to ignore the fact that my star points do not meet because again, my friends, quilty math failed me. I didn’t want to cut 2 7/8” squares for the points so I made them 2.5”. Let’s just say as I was sewing I suddenly had a lightbulb moment over why the original pattern required 2 7/8” squares. I think I had better stick to paper piecing. ;)

  5. What an entertaining post and a cute quilt! Good luck with that un-cutting, you could make some money if you patent that technique.

  7. Ooh! It's lovely. Definitely with you on ditching the stripes, babies vomit enough without being surrounded by nausea inducing stripes :)

If only someone had told us in school that maths was actually going to be useful we might have paid more attention, then again maybe not!

  10. Despite all the tribulations it still looks very cute! I love the red and aqua together. Don't mention the points not meeting and no one would notice! You meant it that way, right?! (You were right to give the stripes the flick though, mindblowing those were!)

  22. I super enjoyed the humour in this post.... And agree that the stripes were almost as bad as the math.... They would, however, make a great binding!

  23. Haha, that could easily be me. I think I did the same thing with my star points on one of my first quilts. Now I run my math by my husband to be sure. ;) It's a gorgeous quilt!

  27. it still looks cute! I know I am weird but I loved maths at school, and quilting has enabled me to use it again - so I am happy :-)

  28. It looks wonderful - I love 'Little Red'. I don't like cutting anything with 7/8" either - such a pain. I say that we all convert to cm and be done with it!

  29. I always cut the 7/8" pieces as a full inch, better to be too big than too small ;)

  31. Hilarious post...I love your thought process! The best part is that the final result is fantastic. I like that little striped block, myself, but my mom would not. She gets vertigo from houndstooth prints! ;)
