WiP Wed – In the Garden

Despite having a bazillion things that –need- to be sewn before Christmas… I am instead contemplating another project entirely that doesn’t even have a deadline. Or an intended recipient. Pretty sure I’m not the only one who does that (it’s ok you don’t have to admit it, I know you’re nodding in agreement!).

I now have all my Wombat Stew blocks from my turn this year. My theme was “In the Garden” and I didn’t mind how the gals interpreted that – so long as it was bright and cheery. Well boy did they deliver! Here are my blocks all together!

In the Garden paper pieced blocks by Wombat Stew

Doesn’t that look like little snapshots of a garden you’d love to take a stroll in? Yeah I think so too (though I’m sure you’d preferred yours ironed. I should have considered the crease factor before taking photos. Live and learn!).

So much paper pieced goodness going on here and gorgeous fabric choices as always (would not expect anything less from the Wombats!). Not only did they make fab blocks, they also came up with ideas for their blocks – from which I drew up some patterns (most of which are in my Craftsy shop – in case you want your own garden quilt! Winking smile).

The ladybug is by Gina, the flowers by Jane (both those patterns are in my Craftsy shop), the mushrooms by Marieka and the birdbath is a block I had made awhile back and it fits nicely with the theme (the birdbath pattern is currently being tested and will be released soon!).

The gnomes are by Alyce, the birdhouses by Melissa, and the hexie patchwork turtle is also by Gina (pattern in my shop too!). The girls spoilt me with some extra blocks!

And these four blocks… the butterfly is by Alyce, the beehive by Lara, the strawberry by Fiona (all three of those patterns also in my shop! Detecting a theme here?!) and the watering can was designed and made by Gemma!

Whew! I think I got all the credits straight there! I must say, this is the second round of Wombat Stew and the girls never cease to amaze me with their awesome colours, fabrics and ideas! It’s such a fun Bee to be a part of! Love my Wombat gals.

So I’m thinking I will add some plain squares (maybe solids or tone on tone) to make this quilt bigger and space out the paper piecing prettiness just a little. I’m not quite sure what the ultimate goal is for this quilt – perhaps a picnic rug! Presuming I can bear to use it, knowing how my kidlets eat, and wipe their hands on the nearest fabric (somehow unerringly choosing the most precious thing around instead of the daggy hand towel or their already-messy-t-shirt! Kids! Lucky they’re cute).

While this may not be a priority project before Christmas, I am rather enjoying contemplating them and planning how to put them all together.

  4. Snap Kristy! Starting new projects before Christmas ... what are we thinking?! This is gorgeous - not surprised you can't keep your hands off it, can't wait to see how it finishes. But, kind of going with you on the 'not for picnics' ... :)

  11. It's is always so fun to see these blocks coming from 9 different people and how they end up coordinating!! It is hard not to do something with the blocks when they arrive. This is going to be one happy quilt and perfect for a tea party out on the lawn :)

  15. Love this! And it's going to make such a lovely picnic quilt, if you're brave enough to use it for that!
I purposely made our picnic quilt in dark colours for those reasons exactly! Why do kids feel the need to wipe their little hands on the sofa, cushions, curtains...
