Feathers

Have you seen the new Sun Print line by Alison Glass? Specifically… the Feathers prints? Oh my gosh. It was pretty much fabric love at first sight. Unusually for me, I had a plan for the feathers immediately. Often I buy fabric, then decide what I’m going to make with it. But Feathers… I knew I had to have it, it was an absolute bonus I had a plan already in mind. The worst part was waiting nearly 3 weeks for it to arrive in the mail!

So enough chatter about Feathers… how about some sneak peeks on what I’m doing with these pretty, pretty prints?

Feathers go round

I am paper piecing all these blocks. Yes I’m quite aware that I could make them with flying geese units but here’s the thing. I hate making flying geese. I hate those teeny triangle scraps that waste my pretty pretty fabric. I hate having to mark diagonal lines. I hate that it's sometimes hit and miss as to how accurate my blocks turn out. But… I love the look of them. So I decided to paper piece them.

Feathers Feathers

Yes, there is still fabric wastage – we are talking about paper piecing after all! I’m finding I’m making more scraps than normally as I’m working with the directional print. If it was a non-directional print, I’d have a lot less scraps. But I’m good with scraps. I have plans for those pretties.

Feathers Print Matching

I haven’t been super successful at matching those directional prints, but these aren’t too terrible I don’t think! Especially from a distance. Or if you squint.

Stacks of feathers

I’ve made quite a few of these blocks so far. They are quick and easy – thank goodness as my plan is to make 37 of them. I don’t tend to enjoy making the same block over and over but with these being quick (and pretty), it’s not such a hardship.

Feathers blocks

I still have another 10 or so to make before I can start putting these together in my grand plan. My plan which is represented by none of the above pictures. They are all red herrings to throw you off the track Winking smile I want to put the quilt top together and see how it all looks before I share the grand plan.

Feathers and solids

I must thank my lovely IG friends who helped me decide on the white solid pairing for these pretties. I was in quite a quandary on whether to use white, dark grey or jade green. White was the overwhelming decision. I’m making this quilt for my son’s Kindergarten teacher. I really don’t know her tastes so it seemed a white background would be a fairly safe choice.

Okay enough pics of the pretties (which don’t do these colours justice, sorry!). I probably should get back to sewing some more of these!

  1. Oooh, those are gorgeous! Stop tempting me to add to my stash! That is going to be a really pretty quilt. I am not a big fan of traditional quilting (especially flying geese, and I have four mini quilts to finish that are full of them ... ugh), and if I have to do a traditional block, I always draft a paper pieced version first. I find that I have a lot less fabric waste when I paper piece, and everything larger than a half inch goes into my big jar of scraps for when I need little pieces for blocks.

  18. I love these! I'm truly tempted to make a few blocks and arrange them like you did in your first photo. I think it would make a super fun baby quilt. Is this one of your paper piecing patterns? Where do I get one for myself?!

  20. Lovely! There's always a million ways to do something and not one of them is more "right" than the other. You're happy, they look great, I see no reason to deal with triangles! :)

  21. I don't like making flying geese either. And I give you a lot of credit paper piecing with a directional print!
