Sunshine on a Grey Day

Really the title of this quilt should be something like Ziggedy Zag or Chevrons on the Grey because the focus really is the giant zig zags. But I’m stuck on Sunshine on a Grey Day.

Finished quilt for care circle

Definitely not my normal colour scheme but I am really loving yellow, grey, black and white at the moment. I wasn’t sure how this would come together with so many different yellows in it, but somehow it’s just yellow. Yellow’s not a favourite colour of mine (it’s a bit close to orange for my liking) but I think I’m starting to see it’s necessity in the colour wheel. ;)

Straight line quilting

All of the blocks were made by the clever gals of the Care Circle of do.good Stitches. We used the Garden Lattice tutorial from Stitchery Dickory Dock – but we just zigged. No zag. The idea sounded good at the time, and I do love the big bold chevrons across the quilt… but it also meant seams didn’t line up. I spent ages trying to get them to line up just so and it just didn’t happen. In the end I gave up and embraced the wonky. And just hope that those looking at the quilt see the pretty zig zags and not the wonky seams.

Chevron quilting on chevron back

I really went all out on the chevron theme. Some pieced chevrons on the back + chevron flannel for the backing and echo chevron straight line quilting. Chevron, chevron, chevron! Ok back to calling them zig zags. The word ‘chevron’ is really starting to sound weird.

Pieced back

A bit of black binding just pulls it altogether quite nicely I think. And yep – your eyes are not deceiving you. I did use white thread to stitch the binding on. I quite like the contrast.

Front and back with black binding

And that my quilty friends, is a finished quilt, Not perfect, but still bright, cheery and hopefully will make some child very happy. This quilt will be donated to the Angels for the Forgotten – an Aussie charity who work with children in crisis and in foster care.

Finished quilt

Thanks lovely Care Circle girls for helping make this quilt!!

  1. You can't tell they don't line up- or better yet it looks intentional. Gotta love those unforeseen complications when you're being creative!

It really does look great though!

  5. Gorgeous!! I can't imagine how annoying those seams must have been - if you hadn't said anything I wouldn't even have been able to tell they were slightly wonky ;) I'm sure the lucky child who received this quilt will be absolutely thrilled.

  11. Well done, wonk is fine, perfection is over-rated and a child will probably be delighted with such a lovely quilt and not notice any 'imperfections'.

  12. My first thought was it was an optical illusion done on purpose...so if you hadn't 'fessed up I wouldn't have known. Very striking, and a lovely gesture.

  13. It's gorgeous Kristy, thanks so much for sharing it in this lovely post. I so didn't notice the seams not lining up - in fact, I've stared hard and think it looks just perfect. This will be such a gorgeous quilt for someone, and I hope it brings them comfort and peace. I'm so thrilled to have played a very small part in it. Thanks so much. Catherine x

  14. I love it! I think I'd take it a step further and call it Sunny Grey (but maybe that sounds too much like a romance novelist's name!) Your quilt makes me think of the Swedish word solregn: Sun-rain, for when it is doing both. Stunning and lovely quilt.

  16. Not a fan of yellow either but this is gorgeous. So bright and happy. Congrats on having the guts to stitch your black binding down with white. I'd never be courageous enough. Hey, I'm not even courageous enough to stitch it down with a machine at all. Thankfully I love the hand binding process and the result. ;)

  21. The quilt looks really fantastic ! I was worried about all the different yellows that I used in my two blocks but seeing them all together they look great . Yellow is a hard colour to match up .This quilt will brighten up some bodies day and that's all we ask for . I can't see that the seams don't match , it looks great to me .

  29. I'm not a huge fan of yellow either, but it looks great in this quilt. I actually thought it was navy in this quilt. Now, that would be a great colour scheme too, navy, grey, white and yellow.

  31. I didn't notice the seams until you mentioned it. It looks great, I love the yellow and gray together. I used to be an orange hater but I now think we really do need all the colours of the rainbow! Oh yeah, isn't it funny how the more we use a word the weirder it looks!
