Lucky Colours – A Finished Quilt

A finish! A finish! And completely LEGO Star Wars UNrelated. Actually I finished this one a few weeks back and have just been rather slack on taking photos and sharing it.

Lucky Colours

This is me trying to take a photo that is not a) just hanging on my washing line or b) just laying on the lawn. No idea what those flowers are, but they are the only pretty thing in my yard right now so figured I’d take advantage of them.

Lucky Colours full

Oh look – the quilt is back on the washing line. Comfort zone, my friends. So! Details! The pattern is Lucky by Camille Roskelley. You know I’m a bit of a Camille fan. What I’m not such a fan of – HSTs. There was a lot of trimming going on with this quilt. But hey, it looks pretty and that’s what counts. You know I’m all about the pretty.

Lucky colours fave

The fabric is one of the prints from Simply Colour – used in pretty much every colour it came in. I spent awhile pairing the colours together to get a layout I was happy with.

Lucky Colours back

The back is pieced as per usual. Just some big layer cake squares sewn together and added to grey. And okay, now we’ll talk about the elephant in the room. And probably the real reason I haven’t posted about this before. I hate how I quilted it. Hate it. Reallllllly hate it. Yet not enough to unpick it all. Funny that. The quilting is just all over loops and meanders. It’s further proven that I am not a born FMQer nor do I think I can be a bred FMQer. It’s just not in me. I feel like I kind of ruined the quilt with this.

Lucky Colours side

I am hoping maybe with a couple of washes that will settle down and not be so obvious. Or maybe it doesn’t look so bad to someone who is not an amazing FMQer (Midge and Gemma, you will not be invited to view this up close and personal. Ever. ;) Still love you though! xx).

But hey, a finish is a finish is a finish. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. And we’re our own worst critics. And the rest of those annoying positive-type platitudes. I’m glad the quilt is done, just not hugely loving it. And that’s okay. I’m good with that. Now. Back to LEGO Star Wars which I will NOT be FMQing when finished.:)

  1. You are too funny - I think your FMQ looks great! You didn't ruin the quilt (though I've done that to a few quilts with my FMQ - haha.)

  2. Yes yes it is beautiful! And yes, we *are* our own worst critics and your self-critique is wholly unjustified on this one ;)

  3. This is beautiful Kristy - really love how you have used the Simply Color fabrics!

  4. The wonderful thing about quilts is someone will come along and LOVE it. And when you don't love it yourself, it makes it real easy to let it go. I have a whole pile of these kinds of quilts.

I think the quilt looks great!

  6. You are being much too hard on yourself! The FMQ is perfect! Now, back to what you love!

  8. this quilt is beautiful on the front and back! I love it! and hey- don't feel bad about the clothesline photos. I feel like all I do is drape mine over the fence (I don't have a clothesline, ha!) or lay it out on the deck. stick with what you know girl!

  9. I wish I had a clothes line to hang my finished quilts from to photograph!! I love the pattern and fabrics you chose to make this quilt from!! FMQ takes so much practice I am not sure I will ever get it down. Good thing straight line quilting works 99% of the time!!

  10. I love it...the simply lines have some great fabric in them. I have to agree with the previous post - I need a clothes line to :-)

  11. You are being way too hard on yourself. The quilting is not so visible on front side and looks just fine on the back side. I actually like the back side better :-)

  12. I squinted my eyes and didn't see a thing! - seriously though?? I think it's fabulous! Keep them coming :)

  15. Gorgeous quilt, and the quilting looks great for, here :). I think your flowers are daisies (http://www.gardenexpress.com.au/veldt-daisy-lavender-frost)...

  16. The quilt is fine. If the quilting isn't you, well that quilt taught you that you don't like that design and now you can move onto another one. Every quilt teaches you something. (If you really don't like it, give it away - personally I think its lovely!)

  17. beautiful. And from someone who has never done any FMQ I think it looks amazing :-)

  18. It's beautiful Kristy! I especially love the back - the layer cake squares are lined up perfectly, and just... Love it!

  19. Okay, let's be honest, you're right, the quilting is not so crash hot. But then, as we all now, you win some, you lose some. As Sue said, you learn from each one. I think though this quilting style "crazy meander squiggle loop" could work with a different quilt and fabrics, that were more playful. These more grown up colours needed a little bit more sophistication. Point being, don't give up on this quilting style!

  20. That is a shame you don't love it after all that hard work. I am sure the quilting isn't as bad as you think it is. I do remember reading somewhere to put quilts you don't like on your bed as they will only be seen in the dark :)

  21. Oh the back is a delightful surprise! Not that I was expecting an ugly back - only ever pretty from you. But I love the back! I didn't notice the quilting until you pointed it out. I wouldn't have unpicked it either. The quilting isn't even noticed when the quilt is all tucked up around the person snuggling into it. Just don't enter this one into a quilt show. I think it's a great one to have around. After a few more FMQ quilts you can compare and see how far you've come. That's what I plan on doing with mine anyway!!

  22. I think it's lovely! I'm with ya on being a FMQer though, i was not meant to be to be one either.. straight lines all the way!
And every time i see someone post a picture of a quilt on a clothesline, especially the whirly kind, i wish i had one for photo shoots! The grass is always greener eh?

  23. Free motion is not my friend, either, but I haven't given up on the dream, just yet. What I have given up on is being able to use my longarm to make rocking quilts that I see on line. Not going to happen. I will be lucky if I get passed the loopy do loos.

  24. Shoot! I was not done talking! Okay, I do agree with the others, you are being too hard on yourself. I think it turned out lovely. Great finish!

May the force be with you....

  25. Kristy you certainly are being too hard on yourself! We are always our own worst critic. I think the quilt looks lovely!

  27. Its very nice! I've never finished a project I was COMPLETELY happy with. There's always some thing I could do different or a choice I wish I hadn't made. The other side of the coin - it drives me to keep trying and work my way towards that perfect piece. Often, even when I dont love all my decisions, a few weeks or months later, it looks much better to me! :)

  28. Hate hate vomit spew! Heheheheheh made me laugh with your strong words. I don't think it looks bad at all. But I know how you feel. I've finished quilts with my own fmq and not liked it, just felt it looked messy.
