A small finish

I love hearing my son talk about school and who he plays with and what he does (like playing on the “into-traffic whiteboard” aka. interactive whiteboard!). He’s been chatting about his friend Asha a lot – who at first I thought was a boy, but was rather disparagingly told is actually a girl.

So now he’s been invited to Asha’s birthday party (along with the rest of the class – brave mum hosting that many Kindy kids!). I decided that a little personalised bag might be just the ticket for a birthday gift.

I know with more unusual names, it can be hard to find personalised things (I struggled as a Kristy in the 80’s – despite going to school with at least 4 other Kristy’s!!). So I decided to paper piece her name using my alphabet patterns – Just My Type.

A bit of sketch in dark pink and turquoise, paired with some dark pink solid – and voila! A bag is made!

Crazy squirrels inside the bag

Some crazy squirrels inside the bag for a bit of fun!

Tulip backing fabric
And some tulips on the back to complete it.

Sorry for the poor photos – the weather is miserable here! Crazy wind and constant rain – so outside pictures are not happening. Hoping the weather clears for the party tomorrow or that might not be happening either!

Ah well – even if it is postponed, at least I'm prepared. I even have a My Little Pony to pop inside the bag and we’re good to go!

And that’s my most recent (and only) finish this week! A small one but one I’m glad is done!

  1. That is so awesome. My name is Meli, and I can tell you that there's never anything with my name (or rarely with Melinda, my full name). It's great to be unique, but as a kid it often left me out with a sister Allison and a brother Josh who always found their names on everything.

  2. Cute! All our kids have uncommon names, so I definitely understand your thinking :o)

  3. That's lovely, I'm sure she's going to be very excited! Her mum is brave having all those littlies in one place, perhaps you should make her a survival bag with some little bottles of alcohol for after party use! Hehehehe!

  4. That's a really sweet gift. I too like to give something personalised especially to kids with unusual names.

  7. Great idea, good job it wasn't a really long name, I have a friend with 3 children, parents and adults all have 8 letters or more in their names, so making something personalised can mean small lettering!

  8. Great bag! I think 4 letters is my limit for personalisation ;-)

  10. how lovely, she'll be thrilled to have something personalised. As a child, and even today, it's impossible to find things with my name on, it's not even a particularly unusual name!

  13. The bag is so cute! You are great for thinking to put her name on it! When I was little, I was always disappointed when I couldn't find personalized things with my name. She will love and carry that bag around for a *long* time!

  17. It turned out so fab and it's the first time I have seen your 'Just My Type' in both upper and lower case together. Now if you could just slip me a bit of that cheeky squirrel fabric from your scrap bin I will use it in a polaroid block for this Bee quilt. It is too cute for words.

  18. That's such a brilliant idea! I've never had anything personalised, either, due to an uncommon name/spelling. Always loved and do love my name but would've liked to be able just to buy/get what others got when I was younger.

  19. She will LOVE it! Those crazy squirrels are adorable. Ditto with the less common name thing - I don't think I've ever seen anything with 'Jeneta' on it (actually, I'd settle for just having my name pronounced correctly!)!!

  21. I like how you used different fabrics to complete this cute tote. Sometimes I forget that you don't have to match same fabric to same fabric. I'm sure she'll be trhilled to have something personalized. She won't forget your son as a friend! I'm happy he's enjoying school. The first few years really set how a child feels about school, he's on the right track :)

  22. I love it! Colours are perfect. Was she super happy with it?

I actually love her name too - but it doesn't go with our surname so isn't on the list. Aww. ;)
