Borders and hats

I’m feeling very original with my blog post title today. But it’s what I’ve done – so why not call it what it is?

Let’s go with the borders first! I added the borders to my Spanish Tiles quilt (using Seaside Cottage fabrics – love x eleventy billion). I am absolutely loving this quilt so far.

I had planned to add another border of aqua and bind with grey. But guess what. I’m out of aqua. If I manage a trip to the next town over to the quilt store, I’ll see if they still stock some of this aqua. No real rush -  I am still waiting on some fabric I ordered online to back this quilt – gorgeous red Swirl from Vintage Modern. Won’t that go beautifully?

So what’s a girl to do while waiting on fabric/summoning the motivation to take two children into a horrendously expensive quilt store next town over on the off chance they still stock aqua homespun? (Did I mention the child in the window display story at that same quilt store? Starting to see why I’m not keen to go?!)

Why, start something new. In my defense, it’s needed, and practical. With temperatures hitting 30C today, hats are most needed.

New hats

I am not a good garment maker. But! I have to say, the pattern for these hats (from Oliver + S – and it’s free!!) made it really quite simple! I did have to do a bit of handstitching but that was manageable.

Riley Blake hat

The best part? My kids love them. So much so, they started wearing them before they were even put together. It was an effort to get this hat off Miss Lulu to take a photo. A bit of Riley Blake Delighted paired with a yellow solid made for a perfect hat for Miss 2. I made the medium size and it fits her beautifully.

Jaybird scored a red solid and red and white star print which was his choice. No closeup photo as he disappeared inside to play Lego Batman 2 before I had a chance (still wearing his hat mind you!).  I made him the medium size but it’s a little snug, I probably should have made the large for him. Other than that, I’m rather pleased with my first venture into hat making!

So that’s it for me for WiP Wednesday! At least projects that I can share right now anyways.

And really, it wouldn’t be a blog post from me without at least some mention of paper piecing would it? A couple of my fabulous pattern testers tried out my Quilter’s Cottage pattern and with great success! Thanks Beth and Heidi! So I have listed it in my Craftsy shop.

  2. Quilt is looking fab! The scrappy (omg, nearly just typed "crappy" there) is perfect.

Great hats too. Haven't wanted to try bucket hats for ages but am scared of the curves. Is it do-able then?

  5. Lovely quilt! And I love the hats, i recently made a couple using the same Oliver & S pattern and found the tutorial by http://alittlegray.blogspot.com.au/2011/08/lttsa-bucket-hats-part-3-look-no-hand.html to make it without the hand stitching much easier!

  6. Aah, annoying when that happens but I see you made the best out of it! The hats are so cute. Are the kiddos holding hands in the pic? Awww, my heart's melting. Alas, I'm not - single-digit temps over here. Winter is coming. [Insert whine here.]

  7. So jealous of your 30degrees - it still feels pretty wintery here so difficult to imagine the need for sun hats! Those are super cute - maybe I'll try rustling one up for my niece for Christmas :-) How big is your quilt top going to be? The colours are gorgeous.

  8. I think it is my favourite of your quilts so far, girl! I have never attempted a reversible bucket hat - so how long did they take you? Any pics of the pattern tested house blocks? Like to see their versions.

  20. The Spanish Tile quilt is looking fabulous. You could always use something else in aqua, like a polka dot, if you are unable to find the same fabric. Adorable hats, and don't they look sweet sitting together like that? I saw the house block on Heidi's blog, too - great job with the paper piecing!!
