Bittersweet.

My baby big boy started big school today. I’m now the mother of a Kindergartner.

So now he’s at big school, he’s probably not going to want Mummy’s daggy handmade sewing. So I snuck one last project in for him. A bag tag for his school bag!

J's school bag

I was stoked to find a small backpack for him (he is only 5 and a half – the backpacks are huge for the kidlets!). But it was black. And my J likes red. So I offered to make a red bag tag for him. Thought it might make it easier for him to find his bag too amidst the sea of school bags outside the classroom!

Bag tag for school

I roughly cut 1.25” squares out of my red scraps and sewed them together with some black to make his initial. You can see it’s a bit wonky, but it all adds to the charm right? Well that’s what I’m telling myself anyways. Truthfully, it was a last minute idea and late at night and to cut all those squares with my ginormous ruler (the small rulers are still packed!)… welll it all seemed a bit much. So this worked.

I’m happy he had a little something made by Mummy on his first day of school. It might be the only “first day” I can get away with this!

Bag tag in action

Proud to say no tears at school today – from him or me. He’s such a sweet boy – said to me this morning “I’m a bit worried you’re going to be bored without me today Mummy”. Bless his little heart. Like I don’t have a million sewing projects I’m dying to tackle. Winking smile

Meanwhile I’m still wondering what happened to this little guy. Surely it was only yesterday.

  2. Oh, Kristy -- so sweet. I know just how you feel. My oldest is turning six in two weeks, and I'm sure she was my dear little first newborn only yesterday. Where on earth does the time go?

  3. Good luck to your little guy as he starts this exciting time in school. :) I bet that tag will also be handy for him to easily spot his bag amongst his classmates' bags.

  6. I know what you mean. I now have two hairy, 6 foot plus tall sons, 17 and 20, and think to myself, how did that happen? I think you'll be safe with handmade for a little bit longer yet. Particularly if it has cool stuff on it that no one else has on theirs (such as personalised LEGO men!).

  15. My baby started kindy last week. That's preschool in SA. Where did that time go??!! Need a baby to cuddle again (borrowed!) It's a bit sad for me, but not for him. He is sooooo ready and loves it. It wasn't even like a first day for him because he's been going there for half days since he was 2.

  20. I'll bet you were a bit bored without him. I was proud when the first one went... cried when the second went... cried and went anywhere but home (alone) when the third went to school. It still breaks my heart to think of them so little - 34 years ago.

  22. What a great idea! My nephew is three at the moment, so I have to wait a bit before I can make him a tag like that. Love it!

  23. It's just amazing how fast our kids grow up! My kids are grown and it's hard for me to believe that they don't need me anymore. Of course, like you, I still find ways to let know I'm still around and present. The one thing I know for sure is life is always changing, it's us that has to accept and move with the changes. Sometimes easy and sometimes not. BTW, he's adorable.

  24. I have a soon to be 17 year old, and a 12 year old, and I still see them as 10 and 5! It must be a parent thing to freeze time like that. Keep on making for them, they'll let you know when it's not needed anymore, and it might just be a style shift that needs to happen. Although, I love the letter J and would totally rock that bag tag!
