Texture

I don’t do much with texture. In fact, I think it’s safe to say this is the first time I have really experimented sewing something with the intent of texture. I mean sure, I can make something textured with the odd lumpy seam, or some poor ironing, but deliberate texture? Haven’t tried it.
Til now. And look! I tried not one, but two texture techniques!

Texture cushion

Well you can see the obvious texture right there in the middle – a folded flower! Like origami but with fabric. I used a great free tutorial from Everyday Artist. It was seriously easy and yet looks so pretty. The instructions in the tutorial gave me a 3.5” block. Of course the originals looked prettier with beads and things but I quite like mine unadorned. Btw go check out how Leslie used some of these origami primroses to decorate some drapes – what a cool idea!

Now I thought that it was going to be complicated and require super technical stuff, like starch. But my friends, I can tell you, no starch was needed (handy as I don’t even own any). Oh and I didn’t even use a compass like suggested (again, don’t own one). I just found a saucepan lid that was 7” across and used that to trace around for my starter circles. Yeah I am so technologically advanced!

So I was happy with this bit of texture, but it still needed something. So I decided as I was falling asleep the other night (that’s when the best ideas happen right?) that pleated leaves would be cool. Chrissy from Sew Lux Fabrics had a tutorial on making a Christmas tree block with pleats, so I used that idea to make my leaves.

Sewed it all together and tada! A textured cushion cover!

Keen to try out some texture stuff?  Bit of incentive – Chrissy at Sew Lux Fabrics has a Stitch and Share challenge this month with a randomly drawn prize of a $20 gift certificate to her shop. Awesome right? So what are you waiting for? Go texture something! Gosh if I can do it, anyone can!

A couple of other little things - my gorgeous friend Jane from Jane Creates is hosting a vintage sheet FQ swap for Aussies. Pop over here for details.

And of course the Practically Paper Piecing Blog Hop continues! Pop over here to see the full schedule and visit some fab blogs :)

  5. I'm so impressed! I haven't tried sewing dimensionally yet. I checked out Leslie's blog about these and it doesn't look too hard so I'll have to give it a try. Great post :)
