Happy Scrappy Owl - Finished!

This lovely owl quilt top has been sitting in the corner of my sewing room, sending out "Quilt me" vibes with all its might for the past few months.  Those vibes finally got to me and I caved and finished it!

It all started back at the beginning of March with a ridiculous amount of pink fabrics. I whipped through the actual quilt top in no time. Then it got folded up to sit in the corner and linger while I discovered other patterns and of course, paper piecing.

And you know the silly thing? It took less than one day to baste, quilt and bind it. All that waiting, for what?! I did get stuck deciding on a back. I thought about a nice scrappy pieced back using all those pinks. While hunting through my fabric stash though, I discovered a large piece of wide tone-on-tone white fabric. Quick backing anyone?

White tone-on-tone is hard to photograph. Who'd have thought it?! But it's a lovely delicate white floral/viney/pretty type print. I love it. And it's been sitting in my stash for over a year. It definitely needed to be used!

The quilting decision was easy. The pattern is by Boo Davis and she favours diagonal straight line quilting. So out came the sticky tape and away I went. This quilt used an entire roll of sticky tape. Time to buy shares in a sticky tape company if I keep this up.

I also quilted with pink thread. That's right, I didn't use my standby white. I went bold and pink! I got creative! I got daring! Okay, okay, I got.. thrifty. See I had a heap of pink Guterman thread in my cupboard that I picked up at a garage sale and I'm saving my white thread for the XOXO quilt top. So pink was the obvious choice.

A sweet pink pattern for the binding and I was done. Despite it's bad behaviour in this photo, it's not actually wonky. Not on the front anyways ;)

So final size of this quilt - around 55" x 85". Great for a single bed, but it fits a King Single in a pinch (see below).

I'm very happy with this quilt. It tested my matchy-matchy side and turned out quite nicely despite a gazillion pinks being mixed in together somewhat haphhazardly. I think the played nicely though and make for a cute quilt. Oh and I can tick something off my WiP list. That makes me happy.

Linking up with TGIFF - this week it's being hosted by Laura at Quokka Quilts.

  3. Some quilts just baste and quilt themselves - I wish! The pink thread was pure genius.

  12. Eee I'm so excited to see this! I bet you are so happy to be finished with this one! I always end up procrastinating too and it always ends up taking less time than I anticipated! It's just hard to get going again once your reach a stopping point (especially if piecing is your favorite part!).

Anyway, great quilt! The backing is really pretty and I like the pink thread a lot! The top and bottom borders frame the owl perfectly. You have an adorable little helper, by the way!
