Paper Piecing Party – The start of something new

I try to be a fair mummy. Meaning if I tell one kidlet I’ll make them a cushion, I need to make one for the other kidlet. Or bag. Or hat. Or epic paper pieced quilt… (Of course then sometimes wonder what I’ve let myself in for, but let’s hope these children of mine appreciate their awesome mummy and her creativity. Some day.).

So my son will be getting the epic paper pieced LEGO Star Wars quilt for his birthday next week. That means I need to start working on some kind of epic paper pieced quilt for Miss 3. I’m thinking fairytales will suit her just fine. Plus, the patterns are already done so I’m ahead of the game!
I have officially started. I went with my favourite block first – Little Mermaid.

Paper Pieced Little Mermaid

Picking fabrics is one of my favourite parts of paper piecing. And I have found my fabric purchases these days have changed to include more versatile fabrics to include in my paper piecing. I will admit to picking these fabrics out specially with this block in mind!

Comma Hair for Paper Pieced Little Mermaid

Mermaid’s hair is actually a print from the Comma line. I really wanted my mermaid to have lovely red hair and I like this print that looks like highlights or something Winking smile I was rather surprised that some of the lines matched up when I was done too. Happy accident!

Hello Pilgrim Jewel for scales paper pieced Little Mermaid

I could not be happier with this print for the mermaid’s tale! It’s the Jewel print from Hello Pilgrim by Lizzy House. Perfect colour, perfect print. And of course I had to fit some Sketch in somewhere (the rock, and the sunshine). The ocean print is from V and Co’s new Simply Style line. Such lovely ocean colours!

Oh and for the curious… the solids I used – the flesh tone is Kona Ice Peach, and the background sky is Kona Robin’s Egg. I used these in the LEGO Star Wars quilt too.

Must mention, I will be adding the Fairytale patterns to my Craftsy shop soon – promise I haven’t forgotten! My beautiful Wombat friends have been making some of them for Gina for her month as Queen Wombat. G has been making some of the other blocks and testing them for me (you can see how Gina’s blocks are looking here), and I’ll be making/testing them myself also. Gina’s the reason behind these patterns so I’m keen for her to have a chance to get her quilt together before I make the patterns available Smile

So my friends, that’s how my paper piecing is looking this week! How about yours?

  2. She's really beautiful!...
and just a remark on fairness, I constantly tell my 6 kids that 'life's not fair'...and so I make no attempt to give them everything equally...that might sound tough, but I think the sooner they learn that the better :) and it takes a LOT of pressure of me :) x

  13. I love her hair! We try to be fair with our kids too, but not always by giving them the same thing. We just try to make sure to balance who gets special things or adventures and we try to feed into whatever their passions are. Like my 11 year old is into drumming, so we help him add to his drum kits, while our 9 year old is interested in magic, so we bought him DVDs for learning and work with him to help him perfect the technique.
